When I was 18, I married a young lady of the Ozarks, and we had a son, born in Neosho. Her grandmother was proud of being of Neosho, and used to ask me where my kin were from, which I did not know, but have since learned were from close by, in a place called Exeter, Barry County. They had lived there for close onto thirty five years before they sold in 1918, and moved west, leaving behind my great grandfather, Enoch William Taber and Michol C. Henderson a great-great grandfather and his wife Elizabeth Wiley, each of which had died there. Some of the family had been in Washington County since 1850 and they died there. Some of ancestors on the Henderson side had come from Tennessee, the Wily from Virginia, the Taber, my great grandfather who is buried in Missouri came from Kentucky as did his mother. His father came from South Carolina. Still others of my family name came from Hickory County, and are buried there. The reason I exhort on this is that, if I had been old enough and was wont to talk back to my elders I would have told her that I was, as my kin were, American . My son, daughter and my grand children residing there, now, can state, they are American , and have come home to where their ancestors are buried.
