    The Alexander County ARES/RACES Communications Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a group of amateur radio operators licensed by the FCC who volunteer their equipment and time to provide back-up communications to local, state and federal agencies in the event of the failure of primary communications in a disaster or emergency. ARES is the Amateur Radio Emergency Services sponsored by the non-profit American Radio Relay League. RACES is the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service under the direction of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
