A walk along Auburn Avenue is a walk through history. Sweet Auburn is Atlanta's most historic district. It is the heart and soul of Atlanta. Auburn Avenue was the center of almost everything that is important to the Negro in Atlanta. African American businesses floushed along Auburn Avenue. Many of our higher educational insitutions got their start in the churches on the street. The great churches such as Ebenezer Baptist Dr. Kings Church, Big Bethel AME, First Congregational, Wheat Street Baptist Church and Our Lady of Lourdes were and remain the foundation of the Sweet Auburn heritage. The great legends of the entertainment world honed their skills at the clubs and lounges on Sweet Auburn. It was in the '50s that Forbes Magazine called Sweet Auburn the riches Negro street in the world.
